Rakaihautū and Rotoiti / Y5-8

Māori ancestor Rakaihautū is acknowledged for digging up the Nelson Lakes of Rotoiti and Rotoroa.

Kaiako find this experience very beneficial prior to taking their classes to camp, or for field trips/tramping, at the lakes.

The pūrākau of Rakaihautū's exploration of the southern lakes is told in active story-telling.

Models of toki and kō (from the museum collection) are used in the story-telling and the ākonga get to investigate their creation, in regards to Māori technology.

The story of Māui and Tunaroa is also shared and the connection between a Kō (digging stick) is made. The ākonga then participate in a technology challenge where they create a hīnaki based on the story. They use a variety of man-made resources.

This can be extended to use natural resources, gathered from the ngāhere, if there is time allocated.

This can be delivered at the museum, or in schools.
