The Wreck of the Delaware: Bravery in the Storm / Y1-4
This is an interactive Story Telling of the heroic feats of local woman, Huria Matenga, her husband Hemi and local man Hohapata Kahupuku, who saved 9 lives from the Delaware Shipwreck in 1863.
Working in the museum education space and the Local Gallery, ākonga link the reef knot and huia feathers in the artwork "Weave" to the wahine called Huria Matenga. They will understand the meaning of the beautiful Tukutuku panel, that represents Huria and the people of Ngatī Tama.
Ākonga will view topographical maps to locate Delaware Bay, discuss photographs and paintings of Huria Matenga, make reef knots, explore the gallery to locate relics from the Delaware and items of significance that belonged to the heroes.
They will learn about the "Hohapata Sealord Rescue Boat" named after Hohapata Kahupuku.
